PhotoXhibit

by Benjamin Sterling in Uncategorized on January 13, 2008 @ 10:18 pm

If you are getting a hanging error when trying to add a gallery, please use the code at the following link [http://pastebin.com/f5a51e4b3] and overwrite all the code in the /photoxhibit/common/inc/px.php file. There is an issue with some servers with a php function that helps with foreign characters and this code helps

Please note: I have not been able to get this plugin updated for Wordpress 2.6+, I have been working on getting it updated but I have had very little time.  I am sorry for any inconvenience.

PhotoXhibit, formally Benjamin Sterling Galleries, was born out of the fires of so many not-so-great gallery/image manager plugins for WordPress.

This plugin uses photos from your Flickr, Picasa, and/or SmugMug accounts as well as allows you to upload and build Albums to help you build inviting Photo Galleries on and through out your site.

Features:

  • Independent gallery creator for post, pages, and sidebar
  • The ability to create a gallery based of some of the most popular JavaScript based gallery plugins
  • Ability to customize each gallery’s appearance with a styles editor
  • Ability to grab your photos from Flickr, Picasa, and/or SmugMug
  • An easy to use interface for adding photos directly to a post or page from Flickr and SmugMug (Picasa and Albums coming soon)
  • Easily create and upload Albums with a single thumbnail or two different size thumbnails
  • Easily turn features on and off via the options tab

The following list of jQuery plugins are used in PhotoXhibit to help you build out your galleries:

Examples

Here are some examples of what the plugin will dump out:

Requirements

  • Till I have an alternative built in, “allow_url_fopen” must be turned on on your server for the Gallery Builder to work for the services other then Local and Album I have decided to go complete JSONP for all outside service calls.
  • JavaScript must be turned on
  • Flickr and SmugMug requires an API key for the advanced stuff, I am working to removing this requirement, but you will need it in the mean time I resolved this need.

FAQ

Visit the ever growing FAQ page

Known Issues

  • Opera chokes on some of the jQuery UI stuff
  • IE6 and IE7 are now having issues when building a gallery and you click the next button
  • The Lightbox plugin has the path for the images used hardcoded into the js, so if you going use it, give it the full url to the image Fixed as of 2.0.10
  • Some themes use the_excerpt() on category, archive, tags and search pages and code will be echoed out for these pages for the posts that have a gallery on it. Check out the FAQ on how to get around this.

Does not work with WP 2.3.3 ? Installation and configuration went fine, no errors. However when I put the suggested code in the sidebar.php (WP classic theme for example, but I tried with several themes) it breaks something and the whole sidebar isn’t even displayed anymore. How come?

Hello Benjamin,

I’m not sure how it works when using images from a Picasaweb account. Do you then download all those images on your own server in order for the gallery/albums to work? Or does the actual traffic go via Picasaweb and the photos are fetched from Picasaweb?
I’m looking for a nice replacement for my current galleries (also using thickbox), but my 1000+ images take a lot of traffic, and therefore I have to pay extra each month :(.
My current gallery: http://www.spoenk.nl/fotografie/

Thanks!

Jack

Hey guys, I just posted 2.0.3 which should fix the issues everyone is having. Can you guys left me know if it works for you now?

Fritz: That is a nice idea and I will will put it on my list to revisit once I have some other issues worked out.

Hi! When I try to build a gallery always get this error message after "Get Photos":

CODE:
  1. There seemed to be an error in the execution of the URL provided; please select another one and try again. If problem presists, please submit a bug.

Options: Picasa -> Advanced -> user: korosicsalad, album: 20050610 -> thumbsize: Medium, size: 640

The same problem when I try it with Basic options and it never grab the albums from picasaweb for me.

thx for help! Zozo

Thanks for looking into the "edit images" thing.
It would be extremely useful to have the RSS actually even pulling new or altered images (after building the gallery)....the point of using feeds is that they feed, wouldn't you agree.
This would make this pluging picture perfect!

Fritz: you will need to reimport any new images if you add them to smugmug. I must have totally overlooks getting that page in, the edit image page, I can me so absent minded some times. I will look to get that in asap; it basically just give you the option to change alt text.

Cassie: I am really sorry it is not working for you, is it possible you can set me up with temp access, I think editor level would be fine. You can send me an email off list if you want. You may be having the same issue as Porgan and in turn may be an easy fix.

Porgan: Hell yeah I would love to have your help translating it. I started put things in place in hopes of finding some people to translate, but there is a ton of work that needs to be done for that. I can get that process start after these bugs are smashed.

On the bug note, I just looked at the site and can see exactly what the issue is, thank you for the link and access. I should have a fix for that later today if not first thing in the morning.

I really appreciate everyones feedback.

Just to mention it:

before: windows, php5, apache, wp 2.3.3, PX 2.0.2
now: linux, php4, apache, wp 2.3.1, PX 2.0.2

Well Bad news.

I've tried with a clean version of wp v2.3.1 and PX v 2.0.2 and still getting those messages.

You can try my wp acessing iarteria.net/wp with user/pass: admin/admin. I don't know if it's going to be useful, but there it is.

Also, previously I was using pt-BR wp translation, media and wp meta plugins and a custom theme, but now, at iarteria, I'm not! It's really a new installation.

I'd like to see it working and for exchange for your work, I'm offering mine to translate PX to portuguese-Brazilian. (Do you have multi-language support?)

thanks, P.

Hi Benjamin, Thanks so much for putting all this working into this plugin. So far, I'm still getting the exact same ajax errors I originally had when trying to add a new album or "locally from database". WP shows that I have PX 2.0.2 installed. I'm using WP 2.3.3 and Firefox 2.0.0.12. I deactived the old one, and actived the new after it was installed like you recommended. Sorry I don't have better news.

two questions:
1.) If new pictures are uploaded to smugmug, do the also show up on the wordpress page? Since it's a RSS feed the plugin is referencing to...

2.) "Edit Images" links lead me to an empty page within the admin page, just a paypal button showing up
