PhotoXhibit

by Benjamin Sterling in Uncategorized on January 13, 2008 @ 10:18 pm

If you are getting a hanging error when trying to add a gallery, please use the code at the following link [http://pastebin.com/f5a51e4b3] and overwrite all the code in the /photoxhibit/common/inc/px.php file. There is an issue with some servers with a php function that helps with foreign characters and this code helps

Please note: I have not been able to get this plugin updated for Wordpress 2.6+, I have been working on getting it updated but I have had very little time.  I am sorry for any inconvenience.

PhotoXhibit, formally Benjamin Sterling Galleries, was born out of the fires of so many not-so-great gallery/image manager plugins for WordPress.

This plugin uses photos from your Flickr, Picasa, and/or SmugMug accounts as well as allows you to upload and build Albums to help you build inviting Photo Galleries on and through out your site.

Features:

  • Independent gallery creator for post, pages, and sidebar
  • The ability to create a gallery based of some of the most popular JavaScript based gallery plugins
  • Ability to customize each gallery’s appearance with a styles editor
  • Ability to grab your photos from Flickr, Picasa, and/or SmugMug
  • An easy to use interface for adding photos directly to a post or page from Flickr and SmugMug (Picasa and Albums coming soon)
  • Easily create and upload Albums with a single thumbnail or two different size thumbnails
  • Easily turn features on and off via the options tab

The following list of jQuery plugins are used in PhotoXhibit to help you build out your galleries:

Examples

Here are some examples of what the plugin will dump out:

Requirements

  • Till I have an alternative built in, “allow_url_fopen” must be turned on on your server for the Gallery Builder to work for the services other then Local and Album I have decided to go complete JSONP for all outside service calls.
  • JavaScript must be turned on
  • Flickr and SmugMug requires an API key for the advanced stuff, I am working to removing this requirement, but you will need it in the mean time I resolved this need.

FAQ

Visit the ever growing FAQ page

Known Issues

  • Opera chokes on some of the jQuery UI stuff
  • IE6 and IE7 are now having issues when building a gallery and you click the next button
  • The Lightbox plugin has the path for the images used hardcoded into the js, so if you going use it, give it the full url to the image Fixed as of 2.0.10
  • Some themes use the_excerpt() on category, archive, tags and search pages and code will be echoed out for these pages for the posts that have a gallery on it. Check out the FAQ on how to get around this.

Updates

V2.1.4 - 04.02.2008: v2.1.4 has changes that will now show your images on category, archive and search pages.

V2.1 - 03.23.2008: v2.1 has a ton of new fixes and changes, please view the change log for the full list

V2.0.10 - 03.04.2008: v2.0.10 added the ability to turn off the sliding effect when building a gallery, added the code to start translations, and some other minor additions.

V2.0.8 - 03.01.2008: v2.0.8 has fixes for the “Locally” service, incorrect path for jquery, checks to make sure GD library is installed and added back in the alt text editor for galleries.

V2.0.7 - 02.29.2008: v2.0.7 has some code updates for jQuery and jQuery UI which in turn fixed issues with Opera.

V2.0.6 - 02.28.2008: v2.0.6 has fixes for the Album Manager not working for some people and pulling from the albums in the gallery builder not working.

V2.0.5 - 02.26.2008: v2.0.5 has fixes to the gallery edit, gone completely JSONP for service calls do to servers not supporting certain functions.

V2.0.4 - 02.23.2008: v2.0.4 has a large amount of fixes that should make the overall experience better. I removed the need to have a SmugMug API and working on removing the need to have a Flickr API. Have a look at the changelog for the full list of changes.

@Troy: can you let me know what version of the plugin you are using and if you have uploaded all of the current files? The error you are has been disabled in the most recent release so I can only imagine that not all the current files are uploaded. Can you verify?

@David: Let me try to address each of your points:

1. The lightbox is not coded in a way that made it easy to alter the path of the image if a users WP install is not in the root directory. This is something I fixed and will show up in the next release.

1.1: I am actually looking to implement that gallery plugin.

2. I saw your video and I see the issue with the lightbox, this should not happen and I will fix shortly.

3. I don't understand what you are saying with this point, can you elaborate?

4. Once a gallery is built, you can click on the "Edit Styles" links and you can edit the css that way.

5. I am actually working on this, but sadly it is not as easy as it should be. But I am hoping to get this done as soon as I can.

6. Each gallery plugin as their own preloading system that will show a preloading animate image.

7. Yeah, it is nice, but I will leave advance styling up to you people.

8. I was trying to implement the triptacker gallery code, but there is no way to do it that will stick with my ideals on how these plugins should work. Meaning, it uses complete javascript to build out the gallery and will not be 508 compliant and SEF. I am working on putting together other galleries similar.

9. I like the way clearbox looks, I will see what I can do about getting this one in.

10. I am not sure about adding video and audio support, I will make note of it and revisit after I get some other elements implemented.

11. That gallery plugin already has the hover effect implemented in the WP plugin, am I missing what you are saying?

Local option appears to function. Okay, very weird. I work on a Mac (mostly) using Safari or Firefox and it doesn't work in either browser, however when I use a PC with Explorer it appears to function as expected. I am doing a test real quick, still can't see the field for the Flickr API but I am hoping this resolves it. Could it be so simple, lol?

@David, Thanks for all the feedback, I will have to read thru everything and post my responses tonight.

@vera, any errors at all? What version are you using? Were you able to create an Album but are not able to add any photos? If that is the case, can you email me the log that is at the bottom of the upload page? benjamin.sterling [at] kenzomedia.com

@Da5id; thanks for your feedback, yeah I was looking at that version of lightbox the other day and trying to figure out what version is best, I may just install all and let the end user select which one they like best.

@Zozo, I am building a punch list of things I need to check before I post an update and obviously that is one to add, thanks. Thanks for submitting to word-press.hu, I really appreciate it. I am working on getting the plugin ready for translations.

@Troy, I am assuming you have version 2.0.9, is this correct? If you can set me up with editor access, I would like to see what the issue is so I can fix it quickly, you can email me at benjamin.sterling [at] kenzomedia.com.

Don't think the jQuery are functioning properly. Arghhh. Was so excited to find your plug-in. Wah! Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Hi. Your plug-in looks great, seems to do exactly what I need, however I am having some issues. Not sure if I am missing something. When I go to set up options I have no API option for Flickr. Thought that may have been removed so I ignored it and went to create a gallery. When I attempt to build a gallery I get a quick error message saying I will need a flickr api installed, and when I click the get images it states Loading Images but they never load. Any ideas? Was hoping this would fulfill my need to access private photos from flickr in a gallery format. I can give you access if you want to see our internal blog... thanks in advance for all your hard work. Liked the videos. Wish it would work!

Hi, Benjamin!

In the new version (v2.0.9) the overview say it's the 2.0.8 version. It's absolutely not important, but i think you need all of the small "bugs" to make the perfect album solution for WP... ;-)

Zozo

ps.: I will send your plugin to the Hungarian Wordpress blog. (http://word-press.hu)

Isn't http://stimuli.ca/lightbox/ the one that is used allready?
