PhotoXhibit

by Benjamin Sterling in Uncategorized on January 13, 2008 @ 10:18 pm

If you are getting a hanging error when trying to add a gallery, please use the code at the following link [http://pastebin.com/f5a51e4b3] and overwrite all the code in the /photoxhibit/common/inc/px.php file. There is an issue with some servers with a php function that helps with foreign characters and this code helps

Please note: I have not been able to get this plugin updated for Wordpress 2.6+, I have been working on getting it updated but I have had very little time.  I am sorry for any inconvenience.

PhotoXhibit, formally Benjamin Sterling Galleries, was born out of the fires of so many not-so-great gallery/image manager plugins for WordPress.

This plugin uses photos from your Flickr, Picasa, and/or SmugMug accounts as well as allows you to upload and build Albums to help you build inviting Photo Galleries on and through out your site.

Features:

  • Independent gallery creator for post, pages, and sidebar
  • The ability to create a gallery based of some of the most popular JavaScript based gallery plugins
  • Ability to customize each gallery’s appearance with a styles editor
  • Ability to grab your photos from Flickr, Picasa, and/or SmugMug
  • An easy to use interface for adding photos directly to a post or page from Flickr and SmugMug (Picasa and Albums coming soon)
  • Easily create and upload Albums with a single thumbnail or two different size thumbnails
  • Easily turn features on and off via the options tab

The following list of jQuery plugins are used in PhotoXhibit to help you build out your galleries:

Examples

Here are some examples of what the plugin will dump out:

Requirements

  • Till I have an alternative built in, “allow_url_fopen” must be turned on on your server for the Gallery Builder to work for the services other then Local and Album I have decided to go complete JSONP for all outside service calls.
  • JavaScript must be turned on
  • Flickr and SmugMug requires an API key for the advanced stuff, I am working to removing this requirement, but you will need it in the mean time I resolved this need.

FAQ

Visit the ever growing FAQ page

Known Issues

  • Opera chokes on some of the jQuery UI stuff
  • IE6 and IE7 are now having issues when building a gallery and you click the next button
  • The Lightbox plugin has the path for the images used hardcoded into the js, so if you going use it, give it the full url to the image Fixed as of 2.0.10
  • Some themes use the_excerpt() on category, archive, tags and search pages and code will be echoed out for these pages for the posts that have a gallery on it. Check out the FAQ on how to get around this.

Updates

V2.1.4 - 04.02.2008: v2.1.4 has changes that will now show your images on category, archive and search pages.

V2.0.10 - 03.04.2008: v2.0.10 added the ability to turn off the sliding effect when building a gallery, added the code to start translations, and some other minor additions.

V2.0.8 - 03.01.2008: v2.0.8 has fixes for the “Locally” service, incorrect path for jquery, checks to make sure GD library is installed and added back in the alt text editor for galleries.

V2.0.7 - 02.29.2008: v2.0.7 has some code updates for jQuery and jQuery UI which in turn fixed issues with Opera.

V2.0.6 - 02.28.2008: v2.0.6 has fixes for the Album Manager not working for some people and pulling from the albums in the gallery builder not working.

V2.0.5 - 02.26.2008: v2.0.5 has fixes to the gallery edit, gone completely JSONP for service calls do to servers not supporting certain functions.

V2.0.4 - 02.23.2008: v2.0.4 has a large amount of fixes that should make the overall experience better. I removed the need to have a SmugMug API and working on removing the need to have a Flickr API. Have a look at the changelog for the full list of changes.

Ben,

Thanks so much for your work. This is really got a lot of good functionality and I can’t wait to see what happens when it’s all done. I hope 200,000 people donate… I know I’ll be one.

Just in case you hadn’t checked it out… I tend to like lightbox 2 over the first version (which was still great)

It’s a bit lighter and has some nice options.. check it out at: http://stimuli.ca/lightbox/

Thanks again… looking forward to more!

hi bejanmin!
thanks first of all, this plugin is just what i´ve been looking for.
but when i try to create a new album in the wp backend, just nothing happens. any idea why?
thank you!
vera

The cycle (new window) opens a photo not in a new window - it opens the .jpg - it’s no good for SEO. Can it be made that every picture opens in a .html, where appropriate (so that the is filled with the name of the photo at least?
Is there any difference betwenn Thickbox (new window) and cycle - some screenshots would be nice at well in the admin panel :)

This comment box does not work in FF3 beta 2.

http://benjaminsterling.com/jq.....o-gallery/ the green box above “The Small Print” has a nice function with Open written on it when mouse over. Could it be added to the wp plugin as an option as well - the mouse over effect?

Bellow “Click in the image and see the jQuery lightBox plugin in action.”
http://leandrovieira.com/projects/jquery/lightbox/ that is the polaroid effect I was speaking about. If text could be added bellow the photo (inside the polaroid frame) optional - would be fantastic.
I know you like the ideas :) You asked for them yourelf :o)

10. Video .avi and the kind would be just fantastic. As .mp3 and text (in lightbox tooltip as well).

And this will become more popular as All in one SEO

enjamin, this is the best gallery plugin. For the last 9 years I’ve tested… some 20-40, coppermine included, flash based - but this one is what I was looking for. So big thanks.

1. You can not go back in lightbox view - in smugmug there is the back option as well and sure it’s for the not so savvy and those who want to take a closer look to a photo they’ve missed.
1.1) Something like http://mjijackson.com/shadowbox/ would do - 1 2 3 (you can browse to the photo you want to) or can go Previous Next Close. (Resized, Draggable mode - few different nice ideas as well)
1.2) Semi transparent Previous Info Next buttons on the phot itself http://demo.oscandy.com/slight...../demo.html

2. Can it be made, so that diffent galleries doen’t mix on the same page?

3. Like the flickr-rss default plugin preview size - 75×75 or misc - one can’t make it on his own, right? http://www.sendspace.com/file/llmo8p

4. Where can I edit the css class of, e.g., the preview picture css in the, e.g., lightbox plugin? I would wan’t to add a polaroid css effect (like http://www.balupton.com/sandbox/jquery_lightbox/ has) to the small thumbnails, but can’t figure it out. (because now we can choose the styles of the big pictures shown, but not edit the thumbnails - only 2 preset style for them and nothing more)

5. Insert a new gallery tab in the page / post edit wysiwyg window (inside the insert picture icon), so there is a dynamic dropdown of the availible galleries (I’m using the web for 8 years, but I believe, that it will be a real problem for a big auditory - otherwise I doen’t see why it has not become a top 5 must-have wp plugin allready). Another nice thing would be a way to position the gallery (top right, left middle - just like in the shylock adsense plugin - I guess you could just reuse that code).

6. Does big pictures have a preloader? (nice ideas at http://www.ajaxrain.com/tagclo.....amp;page=2)

7. Nice top of the window, otherwise badly rewritten lightbox (http://test.thecodecentral.com/demos/lightboxrev/lightbox.html)

8. A tour, carousel or slideshow effect (the last one could be like http://googleajaxsearchapi.blo.....ntrol.html - the best one is http://slideshow.triptracker.net/ with a semi-dynamic effect on static pictures)

9. Additional .js effects (http://homepage.mac.com/yukikun/software/slimbox_ex/,
http://www.clearbox.hu/ 2. ClearBox galériák SlideShow funkcióval)

Hey all, I am working on a 2.1 release that will add some more gallery plugins (ie lightbox, thickbox), if anyone has any suggestions for others to be addes, please let me know. Also, I am looking for a list of other features you may want.

Also, I am looking to drum up more support for this plugin, so if you feel like linking back to this page via a post or blog roll or rate the plugin over at Wordpress (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/photoxhibit/) that would be all too awesome.

sponge: I think I understand what you are asking, you have a thumbnail and when clicked it brings up thickbox/lightbox thingy and after that, you want it to be able to open in a new window. As it stands now, no, there is nothing built into any of those plugins except for the Gallery Viewer with will provide a link in the large image view.

I am adding an options for a - in my mind - a none feature where you can build your gallery, but the image will just open in a new window, ie. there will not be an javascript interaction. Had some emails asking for it.
